Cadets have the opportunity to learn about target shooting during their time with us, improving their marksmanship skills each time and progressing through several weapon systems.  All shooting within the RAF Air Cadets is conducted by qualified adult staff and all cadets and staff are thoroughly trained on the safe handling and firing of each rifle before using it.

Cadet firing the L144A1

Starting with a bolt-action single-shot rifle - the L144A1 - cadets will learn the basics of marksmanship before progressing onto the L98A2 Cadet General Purpose rifle, training for which is usually delivered at Wing level. Beyond this, cadets may be selected for teams to train and fire the L81A2 Cadet Target Rifle.

At all levels, cadets are coached by qualified senior cadets and adult staff to improve their skills, working towards the different marksmanship awards with increasing levels of difficulty. A total of 16 marksmanship badges are available to cadets, and at the Squadron cadets can start working towards their first bronze badge within their first few months.
